Nigeria: The World Second Highest HIV/AIDS Burden

The United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) yesterday reiterated that Nigeria carries the second highest HIV/AIDS burden in the world with 3.4 million Nigerians living with the disease in 2014.The figure represents 4.1 national prevalence rate.

UNAIDS country director, Dr Bilali Camara said this during a courtesy visit to the majority leader, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila at the National Assembly.

Camara also disclosed that $700 million was expended on HIV/AIDS control in the country in 2014, with a meagre 25 per cent of the sum contributed by the Nigerian government.

Camara said 58 per cent of the infected Nigerians are women while 124,000 children were infected through mother-to-child transmission (MTCT).

The UNAIDS country director said Nigeria’s HIV/AIDS prevalence has put the country on the scale of nations that need to do more to contain the disease.

“Despite the success stories recorded in the past, we still need to double our efforts in the fight to mitigate the negative effects by collaborating and coordinating efforts by all stakeholders.

“We as Africans have a responsibility to take up the global initiative on AIDS for the benefit of our people. Domestic resources have proved inadequate to match the global drive for eradication of the disease,” he stated.

In the area of funding, Camara noted that Nigeria should strive to match foreign donations in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

He also re-echoed the resolve expressed by President Muhammadu Buhari before world leaders that all that Nigeria and Africa needs is global assistance against corruption to enable it independently curb other social problems plaguing the continent.

“Like President Muhammadu Buhari told world leaders, Nigeria can face its problems alone provided it gets support in the fight against corruption. He said if we get help with corruption, Nigeria will stand alone, will fight alone and solve its problems as well as take the leadership role in Africa to the next level,” he added.

In his response, Hon Gbajabiamila said the global HIV/AIDS scourge has become a human right issue and cautioned against cutting foreign donor funding for HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Nurse Justina Ejelonu Tells her Story from the Grave BY Jude Nwaobi

This story was posted on 01/Sep/2014 on nursingworldnigeria.com .
I will like to share it as we #CelebrateJustinaEjelonu today the 14th of August, marking one year since she died of the Ebola virus.

I had lofty dreams of living a fulfilled live and having kids. My fiancée and i had fixed our traditional marriage for October, I was two months pregnant. My name is Justina Ejelonu and this is my story.

Ebola Virus Disease

I was ecstatic when i secured a job at first consultant hospital in Lagos. On the day i was to resume officially, I was reluctant since i had started experiencing morning sickness. I finally got myself together and resumed on the 21st of July.

In an unfortunate twist of fate, my first patient was a Liberian senior diplomat named Patrick sawyer. A 40 year old man with complaints of fever, headache, extreme weakness and haemorrhagic symptoms.

Patrick died on Friday the 25th of July, it took the joint collaboration of the state, federal and international agencies to confirm he died from the Ebola virus (Zaire strain). Our hospital was temporarily shut down.

On the 25th of July, i updated my Facebook wall and wrote "Friends, thank God for me o. i had a close contact with the first Ebola case in Nigeria..:.Long story cut short, God saved me dearly. join me in thanking God".

The next day i posted this update on my Facebook wall ""Friends, up to our uniforms and all linens were burnt off.  We are on surveillance and off work till 11th.

Our samples have long been taken by WHO and so far we have been fine. For me,  kudos to my hospital management because we work professionally with every patient considered risk because that's the training. Had it been its a hospital where they manage risky patients with ordinary gloves like Government hospitals and some  Janjaweed private hospital..:lol....wahala for dey o.

I must also thank Lagos Govt....infact! Even federal govt self....all have been supportive. I'm good and so are the others in the hospital....."

Dr Adadeveoh and Dr Ohiaeri jointly released a press statement thanking the hospital staff for our diligence and professionalism. What was to follow became a national nightmare!

The anxiety awaiting our test results was heart wrenching, Yes, i checked his vitals, helped him with his food (he was too weak)..i basically touched where his hands touched and that was the only contact. Not directly with his fluids. At a stage, he yanked off his infusion and we had blood everywhere on his bed.. but the ward maids took care of that and changed his linens with great precaution"

Days went by and i began to feel feverish, it persisted at a very high temperature. By the 14th of July, My test result was out.

It was positive for Ebola.

I was devastated and heartbroken.

By then, i had started stooling and vomiting. All of a sudden, I started bleeding per vagina. I cried because i knew i may have lost the pregnancy.

Dennis my fiancée got a cab and we rushed to first consultant. We were refereed to IGH, yaba.

In panic, i disembarked the taxi and laid on the floor for over 30 minutes begging for attention and screaming "I was dying", The bleeding had become profuse.

At the quarantine center, Even when the bleeding subsided, I waited in vain for the doctors to carry out an evacuation. They never came. They insisted that an evacuation was too risky as my viral load was high. I was left at the mercy of God to complications as a result of retained products of conception.

If Ebola didn't kill me, sepsis surely would

The stooling and vomiting persisted, I was dehydrated and extremely weak. My abdomen was bloated and my legs swollen. The fever caused excessive diaphoresis and fluid loss. nobody dared touch me, I was left on top of my excretions in soiled and over soaked pampers on soiled beddings.

We were quarantined at the mainland hospital yaba where there was no water hence we had not had our bath since the day before, I was hypoxic but no provision of oxygen was made.

It seemed we were dumped there to die with little care and separated in two groups with one group in rooms called VIP while myself and some other victims were in the ward.

At some point I had messed myself up, Dennis put his life on the line and looked for water to clean me up, change my pampers and arrange my bedding. I was shivering. I knew the end was near, I didn't deserve to die in such an undignified manner.

On a Sunday morning, As i lay dying, I understood the reason and purpose for my life, my fears slipped away, I was at peace with my country Nigeria, I forgave sawyer, I didn't hold any grudge against my colleagues in the medical field who deserted me, I was finally at peace.

I felt God hold me in the hollow of his hands. I went to be with the Lord.

As a proud Nurse, I had paid the ultimate price in service to humanity and my country.

HIV drugs should be given at diagnosis

HIV drugs should be given at the moment of diagnosis, according to a major trial that could change the way millions of people are treated.
People currently get antiretroviral therapy only when their white blood cell levelsd rop.
But a US-led study has now been cut short as early treatment was so beneficial for patients.
The United Nations Aids agency has called for everyone to get immediate access to the drugs.
Around 35 million people are living with HIV and more than 2 million start antiretroviral therapy each year.
The discovery of drugs to attack the virus has profoundly changed the way the disease is treated.
But there has been fierce debate about when treatment should start.

Timing

World Health Organization guidelines say treatment should start when there are fewer than 500 white blood cells in every cubic millimetre of blood.
The trial on 4,685 people in 35 countries, organised by the US National Institutes of Health, compared this approach with immediate treatment.
The trial started in 2011 and was due to run until the end of 2016.
But an interim analysis of the data showed that cases of Aids, deaths and complications, such as kidney or liver disease, had already been halved by early treatment.

All patients on the trial are now being offered antiretroviral drugs.
The director of NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Anthony Fauci, said: "We now have clear-cut proof that it is of significantly greater health benefit to an HIV-infected person to start antiretroviral therapy sooner rather than later.
"Moreover, early therapy conveys a double benefit, not only improving the health of individuals but at the same time, by lowering their viral load, reducing the risk they will transmit HIV to others.
"These findings have global implications for the treatment of HIV."

Early access

Michel Sidibe, executive director of at UNAids, argued: "Every person living with HIV should have immediate access to life-saving antiretroviral therapy.

"Delaying access to HIV treatment under any pretext is denying the right to health."

Dr Steve Taylor, the lead HIV Consultant at the Birmingham Heartlands HIV Service, told the BBC the trial was hugely important.
"Not least that they will they will change the way HIV treatment is prescribed in the UK and around the world.

"Based on this study, people will be able to access treatment much earlier than currently, which is good for their own health and will reduce HIV transmission."

Deborah Gold, chief executive of the National Aids Trust, said: "These exciting results should dramatically change the approach to treatment for people living with HIV, both in the UK and internationally

The Global Nursing Community has Lost a Gem! - Dr. Marjory Gorden

The global nursing community has lost a gem. Dr. Marjory Gordon the proponent of the famous Gordon's 11 typology a prominent feature of the assessment phase of our nursing process.

Gordon passed away on April 29, 2015 in Boston, Massachusetts (USA).

Gordon earned bachelor of science and master of science degrees from Hunter College, City University of New York and a doctoral degree from Boston College.

In 1982, she became the first president of NANDA, the North
American Nursing Diagnosis Association.

She was principal investigator on research projects involving nursing process and nursing diagnoses, and co-director of a U.S.Public Health Service Grant to improve nurses’ diagnostic and ethical reasoning.

Gordon was Professor Emerita at Boston College, where she spent 23 years on the faculty of the Cornell School of Nursing.

She was a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, and in 2009 was honored by being named as a Living Legend of the Academy.

In 2008, Gordon received the Mentor's Award from NANDA-
International; she was among the members of the inaugural class of NANDA International Fellows inducted in 2012. She also received the Massachusetts Nurses Association Education Award; Japanese Society for Nursing Diagnosis' Distinguished Service Award, and the Massachusetts Association of Registered Nurses Living Legend Award, among other awards too numerous to mention.

Sr. Callista Roy, offered this testimonial of Gordon at the American Academy of Nursing’s
Living Legend awards ceremony:

"She began this work [of creating a common nursing language] when computers were just starting. And, now this is the basis for the nursing component of the electronic medical record. I think she's a role model for all us. She is constantly raising the standards and the clarity of nursing diagnosis so as to give nursing a voice and visibility in health care."

She called Gordon a "perfect candidate" for the Living Legend award because her work "that started 40 years ago is even more relevant today.

Nursing as a discipline is stronger in the U.S. and around the world because of her efforts.

"Her role in our association was critical – as its first president, chair of its Diagnosis Development Committee, a board member – and as an ever present voice for standardized nursing diagnoses that would support clinical decision making. The fact that she insisted on diagnostic criteria to support that critical thinking – before the introduction of technology or electronic health records – is a testament to her vision as well as her awareness of the need for accuracy in diagnosis to drive quality, safe patient care.

How To Make Your Older Years Better

Growing older is not something many people want to do for fear of health issues and losing family.

But, growing older doesn’t have to be dreadful, it can be relaxing if we go into it the correct way.

There are a number of things that we can do in our younger years to make our older life much better. Here is a list. (Am a culprit of #3!)
  • Quit smoking: Smoking is so bad for just about every part of our body. It affects our lungs, heart, and other organs. It is an expensive habit that we shouldn’t even start. There are many consequences of smoking that can affect us later in life.
  • Get on a good standing with family: Our family isn’t always going to be here. You should make up with your daughter, son, grandmother or whomever. Don’t let them live or leave knowing you despise them or vice versa.
  • Stop eating fast food: Fast food is one of the worst things that we put into our body because processed foods have high sodium and calorie contents which will have adverse effects on our health. We are prone to hypertension, diabetes and obesity when we eat fast foods.
  • Exercise: Exercising is important for maintaining weight and keeping your muscles, bones and tissues healthy. Keeping your weight at a normal level is good for the body.
  • Save money: You never know what could happen. You will be glad that you saved the money you did. Start saving now, even if it’s a little bit. Every little bit helps!!
  • Be content: Being happy with what you have then you will be less likely to be a millionaire, but you’ll be happy. Learning to be happy with what you have and not expecting too much is important.
  • Pursue your goals: You may want to go skydiving or help someone in need. You can still do that and you will be glad you did. If you see to it that you meet your goals, you will be so much happier later in life.
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old we, grow old because we stop playing” ~ George Bernhard Shaw
  • Sleep: sleep is super important because the body heals while you’re sleeping. So, be sure that you’re getting enough sleep.
  • Dental hygiene: Dental problems only get worse over time. Make sure you take very good care of your teeth and fix the things that happen as soon as possible.
  • Save memories: whether it is writing your memories down or taking a picture, be sure to save your memories. These memories won’t happen again so saving them will be very important to you later.
  • Give back: when you give to others you feel a sense of accomplishment. You will feel good about the things you do for your community or about the people you have helped. You should do this without expecting anything in return.
  • Be curious: being curious will lead you to do things you never thought you would do. Don’t let your fears get in the way of something you may never forget.
  • Read: reading is a good way to escape your reality and enter someone else’s. It is also a good way to educate yourself. Reading expands the mind and allows you to think it different ways.
  • Travel: traveling can be so much fun and exhilarating. Traveling will change your life because you are faced with something you’ve never faced.
  • Meditate: Meditating has so many benefits that you need to start now. You will be more in touch with yourself if you meditate
  • Be you: don’t compare yourself to other people. You are just as amazing as the person that is right beside. Everyone is different, but let them be their different and you be yours. Stop trying to be someone you’re not and just be yourself.
  • Journaling: keep a journal about anything and everything you want. Writing down memories is a guaranteed way that you will remember what happened, even though you may mentally forget about it.
  • Be a homeowner: Buying a house is a huge accomplishment in just about everyone’s life. Yes, it is a big responsibility, but it is also a huge step in your life. By the time you are 50, you should have your home almost paid for.
  • Be good to your friends: your friends are very important people in your life. They are there to support you and love you through everything, so taking care of them is important too. People who make you feel good about yourself are the kinds of people you want to keep around.
  • Avoid people who don’t treat you well: when you are around people who don’t treat you well, you will absorb their negative energy. This is not something you need, so try to avoid these negative Nancy’s.
