Mark Zuckerberg in Nigeria!

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday (30th August, 2016) visited Nigeria on his first trip to Sub-Saharan Africa, using his time in the country to visit the Yaba technology hub in Lagos where he met with developers and partners.

His visit to the country came after the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative invested $24 million in an African startup, Andela, an organisation that is building the next generation of technical leaders in Africa.

“This is my first trip to sub-Saharan Africa. I’ll be meeting with developers and entrepreneurs, and learning about the startup ecosystem in Nigeria,” Zuckerberg said in a post on his Facebook page. “The energy here is amazing and I’m excited to learn as much as I can.”

The Facebook CEO visted ‘Summer of Code Camp’ at the Co-Creation Hub (CcHub), Yaba. He also met with developers like Temi Giwa, who runs a platform called Life Bank that makes blood available when and where it is needed in Nigeria.

“The first place I got to visit was the Co-creation Hub Nigeria in Yaba. I got to talk to kids at a summer coding camp and entrepreneurs who come to CcHub to build and launch their apps. I’m looking forward to meeting more people in Nigeria,” he said.

Expectedly, Zuckerberg also visited Andela Lagos office. According to Seni Sulyman, Director, Andela Lagos, his visit reinforced not only his support of Andela’s mission, “but his belief that indeed the next generation of great technology leaders will come out of Lagos, Nigeria and cities across Africa.”

“Mark’s visit demonstrates to all Nigerian developers and entrepreneurs that they’ve caught the attention of the tech world, and they are capable of succeeding on a truly global level,” he added

Protect Yourself Against Zika Virus

For those of us living in the US. Zika has arrived in the United States, but there are ways to protect yourself against the mosquito-borne virus.

Zika Virus wncn.comWith no vaccine or drugs to treat Zika, concerns about the virus are growing. Florida reported five new non travel-related cases of the virus last week.

How can you fight back against this threat?

The military takes steps like Permethrin- treated uniforms, DEET or Picaridin loaded repellent applied to skin, properly worn uniforms to reduce skin exposure and Permethrin treated bed nets. With deep experience working in mosquito-infested areas, it is well worth applying their best practice to home defense.

  • Fight back

A layered, combined defense is the best strategy. The military recommends it, as do the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization.
Know what the insiders know and arm yourself with these four things: repellent, invisible shields, clothing and nets. Here are some top picks.

  • ·        Military Grade Repellent

Insect repellent is an excellent way to combat Zika and other mosquito-transmitted threats. What are some of the best options?

About three decades ago, the military began working closely with 3M to develop a better way to defeat mozzies. Ultrathon Lotion was born -- militaries all around the world use it in jungles and other mosquito dense areas.  The product, which is available for $10.50, is designed so that the DEET evaporates slowly, giving you about 12 hours or protection.

Consumer Reports tested a number of repellents and found that the two most effective products against Aedes mosquitoes used 20 percent Picaridin: Sawyer Picaridin and Natrapel 8 Hour.  Both are also popular choices with some special operations forces around the world.  Sawyer is available for $9.99 and Natrapel for $7.18.

  • ·        Invisible Shield

Don’t let mosquitoes drive you indoors. Set up an invisible shield to help you enjoy the final days of summer. Deploy Thermacell tech and a secret weapon based on a colorful flower to create a safe zone.

Thermacell products run via a small butane cartridge that heats up a small mat. The mat is saturated with something called allethrin, which mimics the chrysanthemum flower. As this mat heats up, the allethrin evaporates, creating a safe, odorless, invisible 15-foot x 15-foot zone. It is safe for pets and the entire family.

The products repel mosquitoes that transmit the Zika virus, as well as other threats like West Nile virus, according to the manufacturer.

Priced at $39.99, the Scout Lantern launched a few months ago and offers a defensive perimeter for the likes of backyard barbecues, camping and hunting.

Whether running errands or running those morning miles, you can also bring a Zika shield with you by carrying the $24.99 handheld Repeller.

  • ·        No Fly Zone Clothes

Expectant mothers … arm yourselves with a different sort of pregnancy clothes.  Get some daisy inspired defense. The CDC recommends you try to limit your time outdoors, but if you do go outdoors then you should keep your skin covered. Aim to wear protective clothes like long-sleeved shirts and long pants.

For extra anti-Zika armor, choose clothing with permethrin. What’s permethrin? It is a synthetic version of a chemical produced naturally by daisies.

In 2016 Consumer Reports testing, the top performer was LL Bean’s tech. The fabric in their No Fly Zone line is lightweight, offers sun protection at UFP 50+ - and is treated with permethrin.

For women, the No Fly Zone Pants and No Fly Zone Hoodie offer permethrin protection.  The hoodie is available for $79 while the No Fly Zone Pants are $99.
The LL Bean No Fly Zone Trail Shirt, made with the same material, is available for between $49 and $69. The Men's No Fly Zone Zip-Leg Pants are available for $99. The zip off pants are marked left and right to save time.

However, clothing that uses Permethrin doesn’t eliminate the need for repellent on your skin, but can certainly enhance defense against Zika.

  • ·        Squash sneak attacks

Don’t let those mosquitoes sneak attack while you sleep. Insecticide-treated nets are more effective than untreated nets. Choose a tightly-woven net with enough fabric to tuck under your mattress. Research has proven that insecticide-treated nets dramatically reduce the risk of mosquito-borne threats to pregnant women and children.

Approved by the WHO, Olyset net technology incorporates permethrin into the actual fibers of the net. It releases it slowly over a number of years giving you long-lasting, enhanced mosquito protection.

The Pramex net, which uses Olyset technology, is available for $39.99.

  • ·        Don't be that person

If you do travel to a potential Zika area, then remember to use repellent for three weeks after you return. This is very important.

Why?

The symptoms for Zika aren’t necessarily obvious so you could return home, be enjoying a BBQ and a local mosquito could bite you.

You in turn could be infecting it with Zika. That mosquito could fly away and then bite someone in your family, your pregnant friend, a neighborhood child– so you could accidentally infect others.

Are you A Gentleman 2: Etiquette Of A Gentleman

Etiquette Of A Gentleman: Are you A gentleman?

The True Marks Of A Gentleman

Some argue that the concept of being a gentleman is archaic. Others argue that the rules of being a gentleman have not and cannot change, and if you’re not standing reflexively when a woman enters the room, then you might as well go live under a bridge.

Being a modern gentleman can have a lot of impact on our lives as professionals and also change the way people look at us. This article has been adapted and is directed to all male nurses, other healthcare providers and the general public.
Any man who wants to rise above and stand out (in a good way) needs to keep in mind a few things that separate a modern gentleman from, well, everyone else.

Consider the following:

  • Make a Good First Impression

How often do you consciously monitor the way you act around new acquaintances? You may offer a firm handshake, but do you make eye contact? Do you introduce yourself politely and clearly, or do you slap hands and say “Sup, bro? I’m Jake”? How we interact with our patients and their relatives when we first make contact with them will go a long way in building confidence in you and the services you offer. If you do this wrong, you could find yourself paddling upstream, attempting to land in the good graces of your new acquaintance.

  • Be Hygienic

There’s nothing wrong with waking up from a night on the town and throwing on a rumpled T-shirt, last night’s jeans and a ball cap to make a Starbucks run. However, those jeans you’re putting on ought to go over a fresh pair of underpants, and that T-shirt should have a new coat of antiperspirant underneath it, even if you haven’t showered yet. There’s no excuse for leaving the house with your teeth un-brushed, nails untrimmed, and hair unkempt (or at least uncovered. While you may not care what the barista thinks of your appearance, you never know who you might see. Attending to clients looking unkempt may just worsen their conditons (who knows...)
Almost nothing can turn around a bad first impression, but a bad second, third, or fourth impression can sure as hell erase a good first one.

  • Be Honest

We’ve all been there: Maybe you’re seeing someone casually, or have just begun a relationship, and you see a woman who makes you do a double-take. Assuming you don’t have your lady friend or female colleague in tow, sooner or later events conspire to make it such that the two of you have struck up a conversation at the bar. Assuming you’ve made a good first impression and have some modicum of charm, inevitably the talk turns to relationship status. When the question comes up, what do you do? If you’re any kind of a gentleman, you come clean and be truthful about the fact that you’re seeing someone. That may end the conversation for her, but if she wants to carry on, so be it. Regardless, lying is unfair to your squeeze, unfair to your new acquaintance and generally unbecoming of a gentleman.

  • Have Context and Self-Awareness

In a social setting, the modern gentleman is immediately aware of the tone and setting in which he finds himself. If you’re at a N200,000/fundraising dinner, that shouldn’t be your cue to drink combatively and test your personal limits. On the other hand, no one likes a wet blanket. If everyone else is dancing on tables and singing off-key to Jonny, unless you’re abstaining for other reasons, by all means indulge and have a good time. Whatever the case, you don’t want to be remembered as the guy who was out of touch with the rest of the party. That’s a good way to make sure you aren’t invited back.

  • Make Others Feel Like They’re the Center of Attention

Most gatherings, be they social or professional, include a diverse cast of characters. Wallflowers, attention hogs and social butterflies are all to be expected. Regardless of who you’re talking to, you want them to leave feeling like the conversation they had with you was the most rewarding one they’ve had all day. You should neither marginalize a quiet type by overpowering him, nor should you try to belittle a big talker through feigned apathy. Whoever you’re talking to, engage them. Listen. Ask intelligent questions. Even if you’d rather wipe your ass with poison ivy than discuss the topic at hand, 30 seconds of engagement will earn you far more goodwill than five minutes of eye rolling. Speaking of wiping your ass...
  • Watch your Mouth
There’s nothing wrong with a little cursing here and there, and there’s nothing un-gentlemanly about it, provided the context is right. If you’re with your friends or even slightly more mixed company, a swear word won’t kill anyone. But in the wrong setting, telling an off-color joke, however funny it may be to you, isn’t going to go over so well with the black, Jewish double-amputee you didn’t notice in the corner who happened to be the punchline of your oddly specific joke. In an instant, you’ll go from being the life of the party to a member of the untouchable caste. It’s fine to call Aaron Rodgers a “f*cking jackass” (because he is) when you invite your college buddies over to your house to watch football. It’s not so fine when your boss invites you over to his. Neither is  it fine when attending to clients or in a professional environment.
I find it rather disturbing when my colleagues run their mouth while on duty or in a professional environment just because another friend is around them.
Have some decorum!

  • Remove Your Hat Indoors

Yes, this is an old one, but a good one. If you’re going someplace and you’ll be staying a while, take your hat off It just shows a little respect for the establishment you’re entering. Don’t want to because your hair will get messed up? Too bad — in that case, you shouldn’t have worn a hat.

This isn’t the 1950s, and a hat is no longer a de facto part of a man’s wardrobe.

  • Wait For Others to Get Their Food Before Eating
If you’re out for a meal with a group, the gentlemanly thing to do is to wait for all parties to get their food before digging in. You don’t want to be the one guy shoveling food in his face while others are still conversing. Plus, you’ll finish before everyone else and have to sit in silence while they finish. Speaking of which, take small bites. It’ll help your meal last longer, and you never know when you might want to jump into the conversation. The exception: If there are more than six of you, go ahead and eat. There’s no need to make others feel like they’re forcing you to let your food get cold while the waiter brings out eight more plates.

When You're With A Woman

Etiquette She Appreciates
  • Holding the door: Don’t worry about coming off as misogynistic or insensitive to her capabilities as a human being. Everyone appreciates a little hand. However, don’t make a show out of running ahead to reach the door before she does (unless she’s carrying something). In that case, simply reach over her and assist her with opening the door. Remember, she can open it herself. It’s the thought that counts.

  • Opening the car door: Provided you’re parked on the same side of the street as the place you’re leaving, this takes zero time or effort and reflects well on you as a gentleman. However, like with holding entry doors, don’t make a show of running around to the other side of the car if you’re parked in the other direction. If a gesture requires obvious effort and expense, it goes from being gallant to buffoonish.

  • Entering a cab first:Counterintuitive, but if your lady friend is wearing a skirt or dress, it’s a lot easier for her to not have to scoot all the way over to the driver’s side.

  • Walking on the curb-side of the street: Truthfully, if a runaway city bus speeds over the curb and heads in your direction, it doesn’t matter much what side of the street you’re on. But, still, the gesture is of you putting yourself between wayward vehicles and splashed puddles. She may not even notice you’re doing it (most ladies never do), but it costs you nothing.

  • Offering her your arm: If you’re on a first date, this could be a little dicey, so play it by ear. Look at it this way — if you offer her your arm and she takes it, that means she likes you (at least to some degree). Otherwise, it’s a classy, understated alternative to holding hands, and I can’t think of a woman who doesn’t want to be seen walking arm-in-arm with her man.

When You Are With A Client

  • Smile: A warm welcoming smile will make the clients feel at ease and they will communicate better with you. It tells the clients that they are welcomed. But a flat, expressionless face will make the client wonder whether they might get the help they need or not. (I wonder what an angry face would do....). The smiles you put on your face brings out the gentleman in you.

  • Call them by their names: Get to know your clients names and call them when addressing issues with them. Be specific. For example, say: "Good day, Mr Keanis" rather than "Good Day, Sir". It makes the client trusts you like a friend. More-so, respectfully end or punctuate your sentences with "Sir" or "Ma'am".

  • Answer questions politely and firmly. Some clients can be provoking but only a true gentleman will be able to control his feelings when provoked.

  • Respect, they say, is reciprocal. A gentleman respects his clients whatever the circumstance.

  • A gentleman is confidential; He does not disclose his client's privacy.

Being a modern gentleman doesn’t have to be hard, and, in fact, it’s easier than ever. It’s all about self-awareness and consideration for those around you. Those never go out of style.

Celebrating Nigeria's Most Influential Nurse

It's August 25th...
On a fateful morning when a loud cry was heard from the maternity of the hospital. It wasn't the mother... It was the shrieks of a newborn baby.

"Hey! It's a boy!"
"Wow!" "Pretty boy!"

"What a beautiful boy!" (I am pretty sure I heard that)

He stopped crying and smiled at the nurses that surrounded him....

Many years later....

He is still smiling at A NURSE and nurses still surround him!

The Art of Being A Lady - Are You A Lady

“Being female is a matter of birth, being a woman is a matter of age, but being a lady is a matter of choice.” - Anonymous

Ladies

Being female does not guarantee a girl will grow up to be a lady and the current self-absorbed culture is not likely to model or promote the qualities of a lady.

It is a process for a girl to become a woman and develop into a lady.

Parents invest a great deal of time and resources to develop their daughter’s academic, athletic, or artistic talent, with little or no thought as to what is required for her to mature into a lady.

A lady understands that her appearance, behavior, and way of communicating provide others with valuable insight into her character.

She knows that her true beauty is not acquired at a make-up counter, with a new outfit, or by following the latest Hollywood trend. Rather, she understands true beauty is first inward.

A lady understands that her real strength is not found in trying to be like a man, but rather, in being gracious, thoughtful, kind, intelligent, self-assured, and poised.

The traits of a lady include:
  • A lady is generous with her time, wisdom, and resources. She is a woman of her word and follows through with her commitments, whatever the cost. She willingly serves others and extends a hand to those in need. She manages her priorities and time well – understanding that she can only serve others after she has taken care of herself.
  •  A lady possesses a positive outlook on life.  Her humor, wisdom, and consistent encouragement attract others to her.
  • A lady is a lifelong learner. She maintains a teachable posture and embraces change for the better. She does not compare herself to others, but embraces her strengths and accepts her weaknesses.
  • A lady models civility in how she treats others. She demonstrates respect, restraint, and personal responsibility in her appearance, behavior, and communication. She is honorable, and values and respects others.
  • A lady is well-mannered and knows what is appropriate. She is able to navigate various social and professional settings with ease and proficiency. She embraces all people – those from other cultures, as well as individuals from various social and economic backgrounds.
  • A lady possesses a strong work ethic. She takes pride in her labor at home and in the community, and strives to give her very best. She is trustworthy, loyal, and people speak well of her.
  • A lady is poised, graceful, and confident. Her posture and body language communicate a strong personal presence.
  • A lady is well-dressed. She knows how to select clothing that is modest, age appropriate, within her budget, and perfect for the occasion. She is well-groomed, practices good hygiene, and maintains her health. She understands that her personal appearance – the way she chooses to dress, groom, and carry herself – communicates instantly to others who she is.
  • A lady is well-spoken and a generous listener. She knows how to effectively connect with others and communicate her message. Her words are kind, tactful, and free from gossip. She is gracious and inclusive.
  • A lady manages her home and the needs of her family. She creates a welcome, peaceful, loving, and nourishing environment – a safe shelter from the storms of life. Her actions reflect whom she has chosen to be rather than base them upon the opinions of others.

Our society is a case in point for the need to embrace the understandable and, ultimately, achievable principles of being a lady.

The art of being a lady is relevant for today and it is accessible to every woman – young and old.

Exposé: Nurses and Attitude

Warning Nurse in bad mood
It is said that nurses are lousy. They act shabbily, dress shabbily and have no courtesy.
It would not be surprising to find yourself harassed as a patient, patient relative or significant other.

But this trend or culture is said to be  associated or found among the females.

At this point, I will like to educate the public that not all nurses are females. So, when I say that most nurses seem not have basic etiquette I mean both males and females.

I have had individuals talk about the bad experiences they have had while in hospitals; rude comments from nurses, how nurses snubbed or humiliated them.

The male counter-parts seem to have lesser or no difficulties interacting with clients. They are more friendly and more dedicated to their jobs than the females.
You may be think i am being biased here because I am a male but not all nurses (females) are bad; there are some really great friendly, courteous and helpful ones.

A client once told me she had being greeted with with an angry look or a rude comment in most times when she was in the hospital.

Do I say female nurses have bad attitudes to work and to patients?  Maybe  I will take this as a research question. But I bet I will have lots of resources to support my hypothesis!

What I will like to say is this:

  • The patient is in pains and needs our comfort and understanding at that moment not angry and rude comments to make them feel worse
  • It is not the patient(s) fault he or she is ill (even though some may be self-inflicted)
  • We are in the hospital to assist the patient
  • Remember why we are in the profession: Service to humanity or was it something else?
  • Do not transfer aggressions onto patients - self control is paramount
  • We might be patients one day
  • The Golden Rule applies to all
  • We are not "better" than the patient
  • People come to the hospital all stressed out physically and emotionally; a little warmth and friendliness may be the only medicine they need.

Nursing is all about attitude

Conclusively, Nursing is about ATTITUDE but not negative attitude.

I will want to stop here as it seems I may be about to write a 400-paged book!

For those of us saying it is not easy to deal with patients, try being a patient and see if you can handle some of "your own attitude" (as the recipient, of course).

Needless to say, nurses make the worst patients! True or false?

August 23 is World Internaut Day!!

Happy-Internaut-Day-v3-720-624x351
Happy Internaut Day!!
The web went public on August 23, 1991, and it has come a long way in 25 years. Internaut is a portmanteau of the words Internet and astronaut
Internaut = internet nauta, which is Greek for traveler.

It is defined as a “designer, operator, or technically capable user of the internet.

An internaut is online savvy, typically through years of online experience, with a thorough knowledge of how to use search engines, Internet resources, forums, newsgroups and chat rooms to find information. The more someone knows about the Internet, its history and politics, the more likely the term internaut fits them.

This means that just the fact that you are reading this on our website means you are an internaut.

The internet was envisioned by Tim Berners-Lee as a global, hyperlinked information system. By 1985, the first DNS system was setup in Europe. By 1988, America and Europe were connected by the internet. Beginning with participants in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), it gradually expanded to members of the Internet Society (ISoc) and the larger community.

Happy World Internaut day!

Some Facts about the internet and the web:

1. The Internaut day is celebrated on August 23, anniversary of the World Wide Web, which was developed in the CERN laboratories (Enquire / EV project) in Switzerland during 1989 - 1990, and opened to new users after that day in 1991 by Tim Berners-Lee and his associates
