The journey wasn't easy and it wasn't fast. 

My current position is special. Years of studying and testing. Hard work and persistence made this possible. My favorite part of all of this has been the journey. 

I look back and at one point in my life I wanted to be a store manager at Autzone. 


God wasn't having it and here I am.

Bauchi Makes HIV and Genotype Tests Mandatory Before Marriage

Bauchi State Government has enacted a law to compel intending couples to conduct HIV and genotype tests before marriage. This was disclosed at a meeting of stakeholders yesterday at the Bauchi State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS Tuberculosis /Leprosy and Malaria (BACATMA). 

The Law to provide for compulsory HIV/AIDS and genotype test before marriage and to prohibit stigmatization, discrimination of HIV/AIDS victims was enacted by the Bauchi State House of Assembly and cited as ‘Bauchi State Compulsory Genotype, HIV Test, Anti-Discrimination Law 2017.

According to a document distributed at the meeting, the purpose of the law was to protect the rights and dignity of intending couples, people living with HIV or affected by AIDS and Sickle Cell disease.

The law stipulates that parents and guardians must submit their children and wards to HIV and genotype tests and must disclose their status before marrying them off.

I know it’s your job, 

to monitor the heart rate as it rises, 

the blood pressure as it falls. 

I know the gray-haired woman in the bed is another set of numbers with a name you’ll forget. 

She’s my mother. 

She grows tomatoes on her porch and has a song to sing for every occasion. 

She loves side stroke and chocolate and Japanese art. 

She makes the best poached eggs, and she knows exactly how to scratch my head to lull me to sleep. 

I know it’s your job to find the clot. To bathe the wound. To ease the pain. Thank you.

Thank you for your hands as they slip the needle into her arms, the arms that gather me when frightened or cold. 

Thank you for your feet as they run down the halls to examine her heart, her heart that holds so many. 

Thank you for your art as you puzzle the why of her body, her body that knows itself as a vessel for love and prayer. 

She is praying for you, even now, as I do, and though you are just doing your job, thank you.

CONTEXT
Médecins Sans Frontières is a private, non-profit international humanitarian organization dedicated to providing medical assistance to populations in crisis, without discrimination and regardless of race, religion, creed or political affiliation.


JOB DESCRIPTION

•  Perform all anesthetic medical activities according to MSF policies, protocols and universal hygiene standards, in order to ensure the quality of pre, during, and post-operative care of patients.

• Perform consultation to patients due [or surgery, evaluate the risks of operating (in collaboration With the surgeon), obtain patient's written authorization (or their operation, provide patients with appropriate information on their illness and treatments, and decide on what type of anesthetic to use

• According to set procedures, carry out all nursing anesthetic related activities during surgery in order to collaborate in patient's adequate anesthetized state and safety during the process. Preparing the drugs, material, and equipment required for surgery. Monitoring patients throughout the whole intervention, administering, and maintaining anesthetic following the rules of hygiene and a-sepsis in force.

• Provide post-operative care, including immediate post-operative surveillance in the recovery room and patients present in the intensive care unit, in order to adapt the prescriptions, with special focus on patient's pain relief, during the stabilization and recovery process 

• Collaborate With other departments and support other medical services to support the overall MSF project.

• Carry out administrative procedures and documents (fill in patient files, forms, etc.) in order to have updated and correct information about day-to-day activities.

• Respect, promote, and ensure medical confidentiality.

• Assist Anaesthetist Doctor as needed

REQUIRED SKILLS AND CONDITIONS

• Education; Diploma In Anesthesia + current Practice License required
• Experience: 1 year experience minimum as a nurse anesthetist
• Languages: Fluent In spoken and written English and Hausa required

WORK LOCATION
Jahun Hospital, Jigawa State (Nigeria) 


WORK HOURS
Availability for shifts up to 12 hours, night or day, and flexibility is required.

I graduate with my Doctor of Nursing Practice degree! 

These past four years has consisted of a lot of sleepless nights, crying, and stressing, but thank God it is all over!! To God be the Glory!!! If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have made it! I have to thank my family and friends for riding on this journey with me from the beginning to the end!!! Every accomplishment I make, they are always there!! 

Over 25 people even travelled 8 hours with me just to watch me graduate. That is love! Special shoutout to my husband Ronny Green for being by my side through it all! When I wanted to quit, he encouraged me not to. He believed in me more than I believed in myself. He has been there to dry the tears, rub my back, massage my feet, and be my bodyguard when I was trying to take on too much. I love him beyond measures and couldn't have chose a better companion! 

I have enjoyed this journey, but I am beyond grateful that it has come to an end!!
