In Kaduna 72% adolescent girls infected with HIV/AIDS don't know their status

About 72 percent of HIV/AIDS infected adolescents in Kaduna State are young girls who don't know that they are carrying the virus, a Non-Governmental Organisation has said.

To this end, the group said it will train about 60 young girls carrying the virus who will in turn champion the activities of a project, "Big Sis Lock Down the Virus."

Speaking on Friday, June 10, 2016, the State Coordinator of Association of Young Persons Living with HIV/AIDS, Sunday Aaron, said the training of the infected young girls was to curtail further transmission.

"We will train 60 young girls who are infected so that we can send them to facilities close to them to access treatment," Sunday said.

He said the project will be carried out in Jema'a and Jaba  Local Government Areas where the prevalence rate are  high.

"We choose these communities so that our support groups can partner with us by mobilising the people," Sunday said adding that the project, "The Big Sis: Lock down the virus for the prevention of new infection," and end the scourge by 2030."

What is happening to our leaders.

Surfing through the net I came across a very interesting headline:
PUBLIC ALERT: New Deadly Disease, SJS, Detected in Nigeria

As a health worker, I found it confusing because I have not only heard but read and had also come across and managed patients who had developed Stephen Johnson's Syndrome as an adverse reaction to certain drugs.
Going through the article, this information emanated from the Minister of Health Prof. Isaac Adewole at a News conference in Abuja. Nigerianbulletin.com carried this news(13/5/2016) with a reference to premiumtimesng.com .

I was forced to ask if the Health Minister was actually health-inclined and if this "discovery" was actually new to him.

If this article is true, then we as Nigerians will need to question the qualifications of our Health Minister because I find it negatively funny that a Health Minister who must have undergone series of training in medical schools will not have an idea of what Stephen Johnson's Syndrome is.

If this article is true then I must say the Health Sector of this country is already in disarray and if nothing is done the whole country is doomed health-wise.

If this article is true, then I call on all stake-holders in the Health Industry especially doctors and nurses to agitate for the replacement of the Health Minister who according to this so-called public alert is not deemed fit to lead a sector which comprises of a lot of intellectuals who are up-to-date with modern health trends and are ready to move this nation forward.

As at the time I wrote this piece, premiumtimesng.com have suspended/taken down the so-called public alert with an apology on their page as they wait to get facts about the story.
BELOW IS THE ARTICLE as copied from nigerianbulletin.com.
Stephen Johnson Syndrome, (SJS), a new dangerous disease has been detected in Nigeria according to Health Minister Isaac Adewole.
According to him, the disease has killed a Nigerian while another is currently undergoing treatment at the National Hospital Abuja.
“We have to find a means to communicate with Nigerians, so they should all be aware of this dangerous disease and it is the sole business of government to enlighten the society by trying to increase their awareness, knowledge and to improve their quality way of life," he said.
Dr. Olanrewaju Falodun a Senior Consultant Physician/Dermatologist at the National Hospital, Abuja, described the disease.
“Stephens Johnson Syndrome, is an immune complex mediated hypersensitivity reaction that typically involves the skin and mucous membranes and was first described in 1922 by Albert Stevens and Frank Johnson,” Mr. Falodun said.
SJS is a rare and unpredictable reaction, and is also a minor form of toxic epidermal necrolysis with less than 10 percent body surface area involvement, the consultant said.
“SJS is a rare but serious and potentially life-threatening contagious drug reaction. Incidence of SJS is estimated between 1.1 and 7.1 cases per million per year and is more prevalent in women than men," he said.
Symptoms of the disease include fever, sore throat, running nose, fatigue, general aches and pains, ulcers in mouth, genitals, anal regions as well as conjunctivitis.
The health complications, Mr. Falodun said, are pigmentation problems, skin scarring, scarred genitals, joint pains, lung diseases, obstructive disorders and eye complications, adhesions, ulcers, and blindness.
He however said the cause of the disease remained unknown in a quarter to half of cases but that self-medications appeared to be one of its causes.
He urged the public not to misuse drugs and called on individuals with previous drug reactions to always inform healthcare practitioners so that they would be able to predict who is at risk of the disease using genetic screening.
