U.S. military wants to create cyborg soldiers

The U.S. military is working to create a chip that can be implanted in a soldier's brain to connect it directly to computers that can deliver data on an enemy's position, maps and battle instructions.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency(DARPA) has developed the brain-machine interface, claiming that the neural connection is going to open the channel between modern electronics and the human brain.

According to DARPA's Neural Engineering System Design program, Phillip Alveda, cited by Computer World, the soldier cyborgs would be better and safer fighters due to the implanted chip.

REASONS FOR FEMALE INFERTILITY

‘If you are over 35 and have been trying for a baby for more than a year without any results, it is best to contact a fertility expert,’ says Dr Shobha Gupta, Medical Director and IVF Specialist from Mother’s Lap IVF Centre, Delhi.

Here are few signs that could indicate that there can be problems in conception:

1. Abnormal periods
Abnormal or irregular periods is one sign that can point towards a woman’s infertility. A menstrual cycle that is too long (35 days or more) or too short (21 days or less) could indicate problems with ovulation. Sometimes a healthy diet, exercise and medication can regularize your periods and help you conceive.

2. Medical conditions
There are various medical conditions like endometriosis, and tubal blockage that can reduce one’s chances of conception drastically. With a condition like endometriosis, where the endometrial walls start to grow outside the uterus rather than inside, it leads to painful menstruation. The cells grow, thicken and break down during every menstrual cycle. Since these disposed tissues have nowhere to go, over a period they get accumulated and form cysts that could obstruct normal function of the ovaries, leading to scarring and adhesions.

Tubal blockage or fallopian tube obstruction is again a prime cause of female infertility. Blocked fallopian tubes are unable to deliver the sperm and ova to the uterus for implantation and so conception becomes difficult. While most of these conditions can be rectified with help of a doctor, the sooner you meet a fertility expert, the better.

3. Pelvic inflammatory diseases
These are infections caused due to sexually transmitted diseases that affect the female reproductive organs and affect conception. It can lead to irreversible damages to the ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes and other female reproductive organs. It is better to get tested if you had unprotected sex or experience any unusual symptoms like painful urination, pain during sex, itching and burning sensation.

4. Thyroid dysfunctions
According to Indian Thyroid Society, about 70% of women with PMS (Premenstrual syndrome) have thyroid dysfunction and possibly results in infertility. Since the thyroid hormones regulate cellular functions, abnormal thyroid function affects ovulation and fertility as well. So get your thyroid checked while you are planning a baby.

5. Age

Women are born with a specific number of eggs, which declines with age – one reason doctors urge women to plan pregnancy early on. After a certain age, it becomes difficult for one to plan pregnancy naturally and might require the help of a fertility expert to get pregnant.

Writing a CV...cntd...

continued from yesterday...

Achievements
It can include a record breaking GP, an award, a surpassed target, an impeccable record etc. Your achievements are supposed to score you extra points with a potential employee.

Bio-data
Your bio-data which consists of your date of birth, state of origin, etc are not necessarily your most important details.

In-fact, it could serve as a disadvantage. Should you apply for a particular vacancy and you are past the age requirement, you are likely to be disqualified even before your CV is given a proper appraisal. So it’s best to keep those details at the tail end of your CV.

Points to bear in mind:

1. Chose bold and legible fonts

2. Use simple and unambiguous words. Leave no room for vagueness.

3. Have a focus and find a way to infuse your interest and specialization into your CV

4. Be accountable. Always account for time spent. Ensure your CV reflects that you are constantly adding value, honing your skills or getting more education.

5. Never include in your CV what you are not a 100% certain.

6. Keep your CV to a maximum of three pages except you have had several years of experience.

7. Ensure that you can defend everything that you have written in your CV

8. Lastly, don’t forget to KISS! (Keep It Short and Simple!)

DIARY OF A NURSE - Day 3

Dear Diary,

Day off today! Went on a trip to see my peeps (Haven't seen them since November!)

Why do female nurses trip for the male doctors? (...and end up not marrying them...)

THE DIARY OF A NURSE - Day 2

Dear Diary,

Hectic day as usual! ...Thank God am off tomorrow! (Yay!)

WHY ARE THE MALE MIDWIVES NOT WORKING IN THE MATERNITY AND DELIVERY ROOM?

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN WRITE... A CV!

One of the crucial things to do after graduating from nursing school is to prepare a CV/Resume.
In Nigeria, when applying for a job, your CV, is often if not always, asked of.
I have seen samples of CV's that are really not presentable and I presume the writer has little or no knowledge on the basics of CV writing.

Presentation is everything when writing a CV in Nigeria.

Your content, layout, template, font type, font size, line spacing, bullets and borders are all vital in achieving an organized CV.

If someone has 3 years of experience and another has 6 years of experience, and they are both applying for the same job, the ONLY thing that differentiates them is the way they both present their work experiences.

The basic elements of your CV in Nigeria should be profile, work experience, achievements (if any), trainings (if any), educational qualifications, bio-data, hobbies and referees

Please note that no particular format or template is cast in stone; every template can be amended to suit a particular requirement at any given time.

Profile
I would rather prefer a profile to an objective. An objective is simply a goal while a profile is a brief description that summarizes your qualities, as it relates to where you are coming from and where you hope to be. It shouldn’t be more than two sentences or three short sentences at most.

Experience
Your experience(s) should indicate the name of the company, your designation/title, your job description and the duration of service. Your experience(s) should follow a chronological sequence (most recent to least recent). Also stick to the present tense when describing your current job description.
